Women's Hoops Falls To No. 3 Tennessee, 86-43

Feb 6, 2003

Box Score

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee dominated the offensive glass, collecting 26 offensive rebounds, to run away from Ole Miss, 86-43, on Thursday night.

The Lady Rebels (12-9, 1-7), led by Amber Watts with 14 points and eight rebounds, were cold from the field, making just 25 percent of their shots for the second-straigh game. Tennessee took advantage of Ole Miss' poor shooting and rebounding woes to double-up the Lady Rebels on the scoreboard.

"Tennessee has some big, strong, physical players," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "They killed us on the boards. For a period in the first half, we did a better job of boxing out and made some baskets to trim the lead. In the second half, they just went back to manhandling us on the inside."

The Lady Vols (19-3, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) extended their winning streak to 10 games since losing 63-62 in overtime at Connecticut on Jan. 4.

Despite being down big early, the Lady Rebels got as close as nine points in the first half, but a 12-0 run early in the second half allowed Tennessee to pull away for good.

Gwen Jackson, who finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds, started the run with a putback and finished it with a three-point play for a 25-point lead with 12:35 remaining. She drove to the basket, and the ball rolled off her hand as she was suspended in the air above the Ole Miss defenders.

Reserves Shyra Ely and Tye'sha Fluker scored 10 points apiece for Tennessee, which had a season-high 61 rebounds. Ole Miss had just 32 rebounds.

Carletta Brown had a driving basket to start a 9-1 run by Ole Miss, capped by Genice Terry's 3-pointer that trimmed the lead to 28-19 with four minutes remaining in the first half.

After a timeout 20 seconds later, Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt left the reserves in, and they were able to push the lead back to 12 at halftime.
