Brian Smith Joins Rebel Basketball Team

Aug. 23, 2004

OXFORD, Miss. - Brian Smith, a freshman point guard from Lexington, Ky., is the latest addition to the 2004-05 Ole Miss basketball roster. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Smith is the son of Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith. Smith's prep career saw him point guard some successful teams. He played his high school years at Lexington Catholic and directed the squad to a 2002 state championship. He posted averages of 10.5 points and 6 assists over his final two seasons and is Catholic's career assist leader. Smith spent last year at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va., where he averaged 12 points and 6 assists in helping guide FUMA to a 27-4 record. "We're excited to have him here," said Rebel head coach Rod Barnes. "He has certainly been taught the game well, because his father is such a highly-respected coach. He will provide us depth at the point guard position, and I'm looking forward to coaching him." Smith is the youngest of Tubby's three sons and the third to play at an SEC school. G.G. Smith was a 1998 All-SEC pick and four-year guard at Georgia 1996-99, while Saul started at the point on three SEC Champion Kentucky squads and played for the Wildcats 1998-2001. Ole Miss opens the 2004-05 basketball campaign Nov. 14-16 at the Black Coaches Association Classic in Milwaukee, Wisc. The home opener will be Nov. 19 against Tennessee Tech.
